DBI was started by David Douglas, who previously was a partner of Douglas & Velcich (D&V), the firm then responsible for the audits of COSATU, many of its affiliates and a large number of progressive NGOs.

In 1997, David joined Ratio, a project management firm and also started Douglas & Associates, a firm of chartered accountants. David completed a certificate course in Project Management and from 1998 to 2005 worked in the Department of Labour in Pretoria on the Labour Market Skills Development Programme, focusing on creating and developing systems for of Setas, the National Skills Fund, skills levies, etc.

Mohammed Bhamjee joined the practice in 2005 and became a partner in 2007. He is highly skilled and articulate, with experience in training of community organisations and the building of the capacity of their members. Having recently qualified as a CA(SA), Mohammed is also familiar with the all latest accounting and auditing requirements. Mohammed''s client base at the firm, is predominantly small & medium size enterprises (Turnover range R5 million – R80 million). He has also gained valuable experience in dealing with taxation between South Africa & foreign countries, notably Botswana, Zambia, India & Mauritius.
